material debris removal here July 29. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is managing debris removal operations in Joplin, which the president declared a federal disaster area following a deadly EF-5 tornado here May 22. The storm damaged or destroyed about 8,000 buildings, including several older homes that contain asbestos building materials. The Corps estimates it will remove 1.5 million cubic yards of debris from public rights of way and some residential properties. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Missouri National Guard, private contractors and an army of volunteers are also engaged in debris removal efforts.
