Balestro del Girifalco - Historical Reenactment, May 27, 5:30 p.m., Massa Marittima (Grosseto), Piazza del Duomo; this festival was first held in the early years of the 14th century: 24 competitors, armed with authentic replicas of 15th century Italian crossbows, used by their ancestors, compete trying to center a target placed 30 meters away, on the other side of Piazza del Duomo. On the back of the target is a painting of the festival’s namesake, the girifalco (gyrfalcon), its wings spread wide in flight. The competitor whose arrow hits the center of the target wins.
