Lance Cpl. Benjamin Schaffer, network technician, Regimental Combat Team 5, spends some quality time with his girlfriend, Nicole Simmons, before the Marines leave for their deployment Aug. 13. Schaffer was one of more than 200 Marines and sailors who departed Camp Pendleton for Afghanistan with RCT 5 to replace Regimental Combat Team 1. The Marines of RCT 5 will pick up where their predecessors left off, preparing the Afghan military and government to take control of the country as coalition forces begin to withdraw.
