KHOWST PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Even at the age of three, Zachary William Charles Short was already preparing for his future as a country star. Now 20 years later, U.S. Army Pfc. Short, a combat medic from Bend, Ore., with Battery A, 1st Battalion, 6th Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Task Force Duke, uses his free time while deployed to write his own country songs, some of which have gotten major airplay on local stations in the U.S.
