FORWARD OPERATING BASE JACKSON, Helmand province, Afghanistan - Sgt. Jason R. Slattery, an explosive ordnance disoposal technician of Explosive Ordnance Company, 8th Engineer Support Battalion, places his EOD badge on the memorial stand of his partner, Sgt. Daniel J. Patron, during a memorial ceremony for three fallen heroes of 8th ESB and 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment at Forward Operating Base Jackson, Aug. 16. Patron was killed in action while interrogating an improvised explosive device during combat operations in Sangin, Afghanistan, Aug 6. Patron, an EOD technician, served in Iraq and volunteered to extend his enlistment to support the Marines of 1/5. The Ohio native was remembered by fellow Marines for his dedication as a technician, his positive attitude and his contagious smile. (Photo by Cpl. Logan W. Pierce)
