Petty Officer 3rd Class Susanne Salerno of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 4 performs a filter cake test in the mud lab at the water well site where the mud is constantly monitored for viscosity, sand content and acidity. The mud program is essential to water well drilling as the mud is pumped down the drill shaft to cool the drill bit, carry away cuttings and seal the well shaft. NMCB 4 is a component of the Naval Expeditionary Combat Command that provides contingency engineering and construction across Afghanistan in support of the overall mission of International Security Assistance Forces and regional combat commander requirements.
