Raymond Mountford was aboard the USS Hammann, DD-412 on June 6, 1942. The Hammann was rendering aid to the stricken carrier, USS Yorktown, when she was hit by a torpedo fired from the IJN Submarine I-168. Mountford jumped overboard and would remain in the water for nearly six hours before being rescued. He would complete his service during WWII, and would continue to serve in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
