A view of the HMS Illustrious docked at Norfolk Navy Yard in May 1941. The Royal Navy Aircraft Carrier sustained severe damage from German dive bombers in Malta. Since British shipyards were under near daily attack from Luftwaffe aircraft, she steamed across the Atlantic to Norfolk Navy Yard and arrived in May 1941 for repairs and a refit. Her repairs were completed in December 1941, shortly before the US entered WWII; she was the first of nearly 140 Royal Navy Ships to be built or serviced at the shipyard during the war.
