Lance Cpl. David Makara coordinates a support-by-fire position with a fellow team leader following an early morning insert during an operation in the Northern Sangin Green Zone, Aug.3. The Marines of 1st Platoon lead the battalion in casualties but continue to remain focused on their mission. “It’s good to make the best of bad situations because it keeps the morale up,” said Makara, a 2008 graduate of Lakewood Michigan High School. “There are two options: you are either pissed off all the time or you can joke and laugh about the situation.” Makara, wounded in action, became a team leader for the infantry squad after his team leader was wounded in action during the deployment.
