Sgt. Mike Purcell of San Antonio, the percussionist for the 1st Cavalry Division’s acoustic rock band, Mother of All Bands, beats his drum as Sgt. Jason Smelser of Killeen, Texas, the lead Guitarist, “tears it up,” playing his guitar behind his head for the famous guitar solo in a cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Freebird” during a performance for coalition forces at the atrium here Sept 4. MOAB visited Camp Marmal for three days, playing at various venues, and performing a wide variety of cover songs selected from the last five decades of rock ‘n’ roll. With all of their equipment battery-powered, MOAB’s size and capabilities make it much easier for them to travel throughout the Afghan theater to play music for the troops than it would be for the entirety of the 1st CD Band.
