U.S. Marine Corps recruits of Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, Recruit Training Regiment, fight with pugil sticks during the Crucible July 20, 2018, on Parris Island, S.C. This training is part of the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, which helps to create the warrior ethos by utilizing armed and unarmed techniques from various styles of martial arts. Echo Company is scheduled to graduate Aug. 3, 2018. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 19,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
