U.S. Marine Corps Rct. Guzman Geraldo of Platoon 2060, Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, Recruit Training Regiment, spectates while waiting for a pugil sticks bout during the Crucible July 20, 2018, on Parris Island, S.C. The Crucible is the 54-hour culminating event of Marine Corps recruit training. During this time, recruits, like Geraldo, 20, from Puerto Rico, are often pushed past their physical and mental limits as they reach toward the title of Marine. Echo Company is scheduled to graduate Aug. 3, 2018. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 19,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 49 percent of males and 100 percent for females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Joseph Jacob)
