HAKODATE, Japan (July 14, 2018) Lt. Cdr. William Russell, commanding officer of mine countermeasures ship USS Chief (MCM 14), and Lt. Cdr. Frederick Crayton, executive officer of Chief, render honors to fallen Sailors at the Hakodate foreigners’ cemetery. The cemetery was started in 1854 when the bodies of two Sailors were buried during a U.S. Navy visit. Chief’s crew will be meeting the citizens, sightseeing, shopping, enjoying the local cuisine and cultural attractions, and learning more about the scenic and historic area of Hakodate, Japan.
