In 1918, the Macon Volunteers, then Company B of the 151st Machine Gun Battalion provided support by fire from this position during the capture of the Cote de Chatillon, a German stronghold in the Kriemhilde Stallung Line in the Meuse Argonne campaign. On July 25, 2018, The colors of the Georgia Army National Guard’s 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, the lineal descendant of the Macon Volunteers returned to this spot one hundred years later during the Centennial commemoration of World War I. Planting the colors are Brig. Gen. Randall Simmons, commander of the Georgia Army National Guard and past commander of the 48th IBCT; Command Sgt. Maj. Matthew Marks, senior enlisted advisor of the 48th IBCT; Sgt. Maj. John Ballenger, Operations noncommissioned officer, 48th IBCT and Maj. William Carraway, historian of the Georgia National Guard. Not pictured: Command Sgt. Maj. Roy Marchert and 1st Sgt. Gerard Brown.
