Alvin Wheeler, 89, from Eugene, displays a one-of-a-kind ring, which displays the 41 Infantry Division sunset symbol made from Australian coins, at the grand opening of the 41 Infantry Division Armed Forces Reserve Center on Camp Withycombe in Clackamas, Ore., Sept. 16. Wheeler said the coin was made by a close friend named Cisco in 1943 with a nail file and tent stake in the South Pacific during World War II, and that the ring was given to him prior to heading off to battle in lower New Guinea and the Philippines. Wheeler was told Cisco died during the war, but found out 50 years later Cisco had survived.
