Lt. Cmdr. Hank Cole, left, assigned to Naval Medical Center San Diego, extracts a tooth for Dan Ramirez, a Vietnam-era veteran attending the Orange County Stand Down at Santa Ana College. The two-day event provides services for homeless and at-risk veterans and their families. The event provides the veterans with medical, dental and vision exams, counseling and access to Department of Veterans Affairs personnel and other resources. The medical center staff, which has volunteered medical care to homeless veterans for 22 years, performed 50 examinations and more than 80 tooth extractions during the first day of the event.
