Col. Hollie J. Martin, commander, U.S. Army Garrison, works the controls of an excavator under the guidance of construction personnel as a ceremonial gesture to starting the demolition of 34 homes in the Jefferson Terrace neighborhood located off of Battle Drive Aug. 15. Thirty-four new homes will be built in place of the demolished quarters and are expected to be completed by September 2019. The demolition event -- attended by a handful of garrison staff, housing officials and others – also heralded the successes of the installation’s Residential Communities Initiative, the public-private partnership serving to improve military housing. RCI began here in 2007, and the Jefferson Terrace demolition is among the first projects funded through its reinvestment account.
