U.S. Marine Cpl. Andrew Mariotti, native of Geneva, Illinois and machine gunner with Weapons Company, with Battalion Landing Team, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, volunteers for a fresh whole blood transfusion training performed by U.S. Navy corpsmen inside the medical triage center aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD-1), off the coast of Okinawa, Japan, Aug. 27, 2018. During the training, the corpsmen withdrew a unit of blood from Mariotti and transfused the blood directly back to him – the lifesaving process, known as a walking blood bank, gives 31st MEU corpsmen and medical officers a ready supply of donor blood for the critically injured when transport to a higher level of care at a medical facility is delayed.
