    31st Marine Expeditionary Unit

A volunteer, Cpl. Andrew Mariotti, rests on a gurney during “fresh whole blood” transfusion training performed by corpsmen with Battalion Landing Team, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, inside the medical triage center aboard the USS Wasp (LHD-1), off the coast of Okinawa, Japan, Aug. 27, 2018. During the training, the corpsmen withdrew a unit of blood from Mariotti and transfused the blood directly back to him – the lifesaving process, known as a “walking blood bank,” gives 31st MEU corpsmen and medical officers a ready supply of donor blood for the critically injured when transport to a higher level of care at a medical facility is delayed. Mariotti, a machine gunner with Weapons Company, BLT 2/5, is a native of Geneva, Illinois. U.S. Navy Sailor corpsmen trained to provide lifesaving medical care for Marines during training and operations, are integral to the safety and success of Marines during amphibious operations across the globe. Maj. Gen. Eric Smith, commanding general of III Marine Expeditionary Force, and Brig. Gen. Rick Uribe, deputy commanding general of I MEF, visited the embarked Marines and Sailors of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit during the middle of the 31st MEU’s Certification Exercise. BLT 2/5, the most decorated battalion in Marine Corps history, is currently deployed as the Ground Combat Element for the 31st MEU in Okinawa – the battalion is usually garrisoned at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and belongs to 1st Marine Division, I MEF. Marines and Sailors with the 31st MEU, comprised of a Command Element, a Ground Combat Element, an Aviation Combat Element and a Logistics Combat Element. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward-deployed MEU, provides a flexible force ready to perform a wide-range of military operations across the Indo-Pacific region.
