Jacqie McWilliams, a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) commissioner, addresses attendees at a community leaders reception at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art during the United States Marine Corps’ 2018 Marine Week in Charlotte, North Carolina, Sept. 4, 2018. Marine Week is a celebration of community, country and Corps, which provided the American public the experience of directly connecting with approximately 750 Marines. The CIAA is America’s oldest African-American athletic conference and a longtime targeted audience marketing partner of the Marine Corps. Diversity plays an important part in structuring the Marine Corps to better represent the different backgrounds, cultures and skills our citizens offer in service to our nation. Last year, diversity officer accessions accounted for 34.15% of officer accessions while 39.9% of enlisted accessions were diverse. Diversity accession success is a result of the hard work of our recruiting force and benefits from our robust community engagement activity, including Marine Week. Charlotte is the second-largest city in the southeast and growing. By partnering with Charlotte-based regional organizations like the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association and engaging local audiences during events like those at Marine Week, the Marine Corps Recruiting Command ensures its message of aspirational service to the nation reaches all corners of the country.
