Senior Chief Petty Officer Renato Tolosa, right, the oldest sailor present, and Seaman Apprentice Connor O'Keefe, the youngest sailor present, conduct the cake cutting ceremony during the 236th Navy Birthday celebration here, Oct. 14. The cake cutting ceremony symbolizes the passing of history and tradition from one generation to the next. The Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, established by the Continental Congress on Oct. 13, 1775. In 1972, Adm. Elmo R. Zumwalt, Chief of Naval Operations, authorized recognition of that day as the Navy's birthday.
