The U.S. Navy celebrates its 243rd birthday with a cake at Phelps Chow Hall, aboard Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, Calif., Oct. 11, 2018. The local chow halls aboard the Combat Center also provided steak and lobster entrees to all personnel to honor the birthday. Founded on Oct. 13, 1775, the Continental Navy was created by Congress to defend and protect American coastal communities and colonies from British attacks, and to disrupt British communications.
