Spc. John Chase, of the 1st Battalion, 188th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, of the North Dakota Army National Guard, holds a kidney pillow as he lays in his bed at Sanford Hospital, Fargo, N.D., Sept. 29. Chase is recovering from kidney transplant surgery. Chase received a kidney from fellow unit member Sgt. Francisco Raatz. The soldiers have served together in the National Guard for several years, including two deployments to Afghanistan, most recently in 2010. Chase returned home early from that deployment when both of his kidneys were failing.
