Staff Sgt. Benjamin Esser, a mortar section sergeant, and Pvt. Andrew Wiemers, a mortarman, from Bravo Company, 1-158th Infantry Battalion with the Arizona National Guard, prepare coordinates for mortar direct lay here, Nov. 19. The training consisted of an air assault mission where the soldiers egress from a UH-60 Black Hawk, moving on foot to engage with an enemy target and clear a building suspected of housing weapons and contraband. “The skills these soldiers acquire are perishable,” Esser said. “If the soldiers do not continually train, they will lose those skills.” The battalion is preparing for their second deployment to Afghanistan in 2013.
