John R. Medley, archivist and 1954 graduate of the Manual Training and Industrial School, located in Bordentown, N.J., discusses his experiences as a student at the school during the New Jersey National Guard’s Black History Month celebration at the Joint Military and Family Assistance Center in Bordentown, Feb. 14, 2019. This year’s observance included presentations by Medley and Dr. Connie Goddard on the all black school, often referred to as the Tuskegee of the North, which was founded in 1886 and closed in 1955. It became a National Historic Landmark on Jan. 5, 1998. Black History Month recognizes the heritage and achievements of African Americans in both the military and in society.
