Joe Bartlett, Safety Solutions, U.S. Department of Defense civilian, receives instructions from a soldier with 178th Engineer Company, 1st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, during a field training exercise at the Combined Arms Collective Training Facility in the Fort Polk, La., woodlands from Dec. 5 to Dec. 9. During the exercise soldiers were exposed to a simulated chemical environment where they had to conduct life-saving and life-sustaining operations. The 178th and other elements of 1st MEB are currently assigned in support of the Joint Task Force Civil Support, Defense Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear Response Force. The DCRF is a total force of about 5,400 personnel consisting of primarily Army with augmentation from other services and civilians from active-duty, National Guard and reserve units, who deploy as the Department of Defense’s initial response force for a CBRNE incident.
