NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (March 28, 2019) Laurie King, assistant conservator at the The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Monitor National Marine Sanctuary at the Mariners' Museum and Park, works to restore a rubber gasket from the USS Monitor. The Monitor, which sank off the coast of North Carolina in 1862, is scheduled to have its turret mounted on a new support structure by Huntington Ingalls Industries-Newport News Shipbuilding, a milestone in the ships conservation process.
