George’s Island, Mass. – U.S Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Beckford prepares to conduct decontamination operations as part of Vigilant Guard, a training exercise conducted by the Massachusetts National Guard across the state in cooperation with federal, state and local emergency responders on Nov. 5, 2018. On the first day of the training exercise, a bomb with a significant radiological signature is reported on George’s Island in the Boston Harbor. Beckford is a member of the Massachusetts National Guard’s Civil Support Team and he reported to the bomb site to provide immediate, on-site assistance to anyone exposed to the radioactivity. The Civil Support Team consists of fulltime airmen and soldiers who safeguard the citizenry at major public events as well as work in partnership with the police and fire to ongoing emergencies.
