U.S. Army Reserve Sgt. Kaara Dunkley, a Tampa, Florida native who is a drill sergeant assigned to Task Force Marshall at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, provides instruction on room clearing to Navy personnel during their culminating exercise in March. Task Force Marshall is a unique mission for the 98th Training Division (Initial Entry Training) that requires Army Reserve drill sergeants to train Sailors on combat tactics prior to deploying.
Dunkley, who was born in Manchester, Jamaica said she became a U.S. Army Reserve drill sergeant because she wanted to provide the same leadership that drove her to excel. "When I went to Basic Training in 2008, I could only do three push-ups. By the end of Basic Training, I was almost maxing my push-ups, my sit-ups and my 2-mile run, and I wanted to be able to provide that change, or help, for somebody else who may have been in my situation. Those drill sergeants gave me a lot of tools that I could use, not only in my civilian life, but also in my military career, and I wanted to be able to give somebody else that as well."
