Petty Officer 3rd Class Mason Treherne prepares Cmdr. Edward A. Reedy for platelet apheresis at the U.S. Pacific Command Armed Services Blood Bank Center at the U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa here Feb. 28. Reedy was the first platelet apheresis donor for the center. There are many advantages to donating platelets via apheresis, such as a smaller chance of contamination, more platelets in one donation, and higher frequency of donation. Treherne is a hospital corpsman at the center and Reedy is the director of clinical support services and staff pathologist for U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa.
