U.S. Marine Sgt. Justin Smith, Task Force Spartan Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) assistant team leader, shows Iraqi Security Forces students how much C4 is needed for a disruption charge during an EOD class at Al Taqaddum, Iraq, May 2, 2019. Disruption charges built with C4 can be used as a controlled blast to uncover IEDs buried under debris. Minimal amounts of explosive are used to prevent collateral damage. Proper distance and angle will allow a disruption charge to sever electrical circuits in the IED without it detonating. Coalition training programs include courses in areas as diverse as operational planning, counter-terrorism, logistics and sustainment, equipment maintenance, counter IED techniques and law enforcement.
