    509th Bomb Wing

The manufacturer's plate of the B-29 Superfortress called "Doc" displays the aircraft's Kanasas' origins during the 2019 Wings over Whiteman Air & Space Show, June 14, 2019. In December 1943 U.S. Army Air Forces leaders committed the Superfortress to Asia, where its great range made it particularly suited for the long over-water flights against the Japanese homeland from bases in China. During the last two months of 1944, B-29s began operating against Japan from the islands of Saipan, Guam and Tinian and was operated by the 509th Composite group. The unit later became the 509th Bomb Wing, which today operates the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber fleet. Doc is one of only two remaining B-29s still fit to fly. (U.S. Air Force photo by Tech. Sgt.
