Petty Officer 3rd Class Skyler Sharpe observes as Ryan Kahle, Dale McFarlin and Mark Everett practice throwing heaving lines during a cold water paddle craft class held in Juneau, Alaska, June 22, 2019.

Heaving lines are used to respond to a person in distress in the water as, unlike most life rings, the thrower maintains hold over one end of the line so that they can pull the person back to safety.
