Ewa Beach, HI (9 July 2019) - Dr. Chip McCreary, Director of the NOAA Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC), demonstrates PTWC's procedures for responding to a potentially tsunamigenic earthquake and modeling potential impacts to Cadet Phillip Cutsinger, USMA 2020, and Cadet Casey Ludwig, USAFA 2021. PTWC is responsible for tsunami predictions and warnings for the seismically volatile "Ring of Fire" region around the Pacific Ocean, excluding Alaska and the western coast of Canada and the United States. Cadet Cutsinger and Ludwig were participating in the 3rd Annual Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) Academies Internship, for military academy students to learn about the intersection of meteorology and military operations in the dynamic U.S. INDOPACOM Area of Responsibility, as well as tour various military and federal organizations on Oahu. In addition to tropical cyclone forecasting and reconnaissance, JTWC is responsible for tsunami decision support for DoD facilities worldwide and disseminates PTWC information as part of this support.
