Pearl Harbor, HI (8 July 2019) - CAPT Barry Choy, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Liason to the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, gives a tour of the NOAA building to Cadet Phillip Cutsinger, U.S. Military Academy class of 2020, and Cadet Kasey Ludwig, U.S. Air Force Academy class of 2021. NOAA liases with the Department of Defense in many capacities, including participating in a Defense Support of Civil Authorities and emergency management exercise to leverage military resources in the event of a hurricane impacting Hawaii. Cadet Cutsinger and Ludwig were participating in the 3rd Annual Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) Academies Internship, for military academy students to learn about the intersection of meteorology and military operations in the dynamic U.S. INDOPACOM Area of Responsibility, as well as tour various military and federal organizations on Oahu. NOAA's National Hurricane Center and Central Pacific Hurricane Center are the authorities for central and eastern Pacific Ocean hurricane forecasting, while JTWC communicates these forecasts with affected military installations for safety of personnel and navigation.
