Gerald Olin, commanding officer of the littoral combat ship USS Independence (LCS 2), communicates with the officer of the deck from the bridge as the ship passes through the Gatun Lock during its first Panama Canal transit. The Gatun Lock is the first step in the Panama Canal transit where the Atlantic Ocean ends and the canal begins. Independence is underway for the ship's maiden voyage to San Diego.
