This bark from a loblolly pine tree at Lillydale Campground at Dale Hollow Lake taken, Jan. 22, 2001, shows where southern pine beetles bore into it and the females constructed long, winding, S-shaped tunnels that girdled the trees and starved them of water and nutrients. The Corps of Engineers Nashville District had no choice but to cut down the pines and replace them with native hardwoods. (USACE photo by Sondra Carmen)
