Sgt. Karen Lawshae, Public Affairs NCO assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 1st Armored Division Public Affairs, shares a laugh with her supervisor Master Sgt. Alex Licea during her promotion ceremony at Task Force-Southeast Headquarters Sept. 22 in Southeastern Afghanistan. Lawshae, a native of Austin, Texas, received a battlefield promotion to the rank of Sergeant after fourteen dedicated years of service in the U.S. Army National Guard. Her promotion came after a 10-year break in service and significant weight loss in order for her to re-enter the National Guard after her extended break in service.
