BASTOGNE, Belgium – Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Tod D. Wolters throws walnuts from the balcony of Bastogne City Hall during the annual ‘Nuts Fair’ on December 14, 2019. The ‘Nuts Fair’ is an annual celebration commemorating the Battle of the Bulge where Allied forces fought German opposition in the Ardennes region of Belgium from December 16, 1944 until January 25, 1945 during World War II. In honor of General Anthony McAuliffe’s famous refusal to surrender to the Germans in 1944, distinguished visitors and government officials gather to toss walnuts to the public during the annual celebration.
