Carter from Bicknell, Ind., a Marine with Company B, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines out of Terre Haute, Ind. plays "Taps" during the funeral of Marine Reserve Pfc. Jack Van Zandt at the Sunset Memorial Garden Cemetery in Danville, Ill. on Dec. 17. Van Zandt died in combat in 1943 with the 2nd Marine Division during the Battle of Tarawa in the Pacific theater of World War II.
