U.S. sailors tighten a mooring line on the flight deck of the guided missile frigate USS Underwood (FFG 36) May 23, 2012, after arriving in Callao, Peru, during UNITAS Pacific. Underwood was deployed to Central and South America and the Caribbean in support of Unitas and Southern Seas 2012. Unitas, Latin for "unity," is an annual U.S. Southern Command-sponsored, multinational naval exercise designed to enhance security cooperation and improve coalition operations between South American and U.S. maritime forces. Southern Seas is a U.S. Southern Command-directed operation designed to strengthen relationships with regional partner nations and improve operational readiness for all assigned units.
