KIN BLUE, OKINAWA, JAPAN (Jan. 31, 2020) From left, 1st Lt. Charles Sprott, company executive officer, and Capt. Philip Hanf, company commander of Company C, Battalion Landing Team, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, speak with Capt. Kenichi Nakashima, company commander of the Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade, Japanese Ground Self Defense Force, with the assistance of Capt. Benjamin Gentry, a translator with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, after a simulated small boat raid. A platoon of the Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade were training alongside the 31st MEU’s small boat company in order to share tactics, techniques, and procedures for amphibious operations, while embarked aboard the amphibious transport dock USS Germantown (LSD-42). Germantown, part of the America Expeditionary Strike Group, 31st MEU team, is operating in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations to enhance interoperability with allies and partners and serve as a ready response force to defend peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
