Pete Kennedy, the commanding officer of the amphibious transport dock ship USS New York (LPD 21), explains the importance of the fireman’s jacket worn by FDNY firefighter Bill Butler, from Ladder Company 6, who survived the collapse of the North Tower on 9/11 along with 12 other firefighters, to the U.S. Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, John Rakolta Jr, and his wife, Terry Rakolta, on the New York’s bridge during a tour of the ship. New York, with the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group and with embarked 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of naval operations to ensure maritime stability and security in the Central Region, connecting the Mediterranean and the Pacific through the Western Indian Ocean and three strategic choke points.
