Erick Lappi (front), and Sgt. 1st Class Justin Payne, both horizontal construction engineers, assigned to 576th Engineer Company, 4th Engineer Battalion, build a firebreak during efforts to contain the Waldo Canyon Fire at the U.S. Air Force Academy, June 28, 2012. Firebreaks, long pieces of land stripped of vegetation, halt a fire’s progress by eliminating its fuel. During the first 72 hours of the mission, Fort Carson engineers cleared more than 12 miles of land.
