Staff Sgt. Ryan Stumpff of Fort Bragg, N.C., poses in bandages holding his damaged helmet. Pfc. Michael Halberg of Battle Ground, Wash., accompanies Stumpff in a Black Hawk medevac helicopter shortly after being rescued via hoist extraction from the side of a mountain in Khowst province, Afghanistan. Stumpff was shot in the head by an insurgent, but the bullet penetrated the back of his helmet, just grazed his head, and exited the front. Halberg then killed the insurgent while protecting his battle buddy. The pair of 25th Infantry Division soldiers out of Fort Richardson, Alaska, became stranded on a cliff while seeking cover enemy fire July 4, but were rescued by F Company, 1-171, a composite Texas/Mississippi National Guard unit serving with the 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade on Forward Operating Base Salerno.
