One of the smoke stacks is removed from the historic steam plant on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, during the initial phases of its demolition, June 24, 2020. The steam plant was built in 1942 and was decommissioned in April of 2017 after a $150 million investment into individual facility boilers, natural gas fired equipment and alternative energy sources. The project dramatically lowered the installation's energy intensity, reduced fuel costs by roughly 40 percent and significantly reduced MCB Camp Lejeune's environmental impact with respect to energy consumption.
