Charles A. Williams, Jr., left, assistant secretary of the Navy for Energy, Installations and Environment, awards a coin to James Mahoney, public works operations director, Public Works Division, Marine Corps Installations East-Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in recognition of his role in creating and implementing a facility related control systems (FRCS) cybersecurity solution that cryptographically separates industrial controls systems from each other and any network they reside on. The architecture received an Authority to Operate /Authority to Connect on March 21, 2019, and is the first type authorization of an FRCS architecture in the Marine Corps--one that can be leveraged at each and every installation, regardless of industrial controls system type or vendor. His efforts will significantly contribute to the reduction of operational vulnerabilities of critical infrastructure and enhance overall facilities maintenance cost and energy performance in the future. The base has been a four-year recipient of the Secretary of the Navy Energy Award, which is given to installations that demonstrate leadership and effectiveness in the areas of energy security, new technology, innovation, program management and efficiency across the Department of the Navy.
