Staff Sgt. Cary Campbell, a senior medic assigned to 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3ID, stands on an improved ribbon bridge sometime between April 4 and 18, 2003, on the Euphrates River, Iraq. Campbell said he arrived at the Euphrates River April 2, as part of a 12-man squad who manned the bridge until April 18. The floating bridge, built mostly at night to avoid detection by Saddam Hussein’s remnant defenders, was constructed to provide an additional route for 1ABCT vehicles to cross during the push into Baghdad during Operation Iraqi Freedom. It is believed that the crossing of the Euphrates River is the last wet gap crossing to be conducted in a combat theater. (Courtesy photo)
