Fort Hunter Liggett hosted an in-person and virtual community relations meeting with Congressmen Jimmy Panetta and Salud Carbajal, the Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army, Army Reserve Ambassadors, and military leaders in the Monterey County, August 19, 2020. Some challenges the Presidio of Monterey Garrison Commander Colonel Varman Chhoeung discussed include the rising sea level, affordable housing, and constant power outages. He also highlighted that only 28 percent of the POM population is working on post, the excellent COVID-19 support he gets through CAL Med, and the positive relations he has with the surrounding civilian community. Speaking after him was the Defense Language Institute Commandant Colonel Gary Hausman who participated virtually (seen on TV screen). He discussed how DLI immediately switched to virtual learning after the State’s first shelter-in-place order. Hausman reports that they have been able to maintain the status quo and even seen some proficiency improvements amongst students.
