Goya grows on a vine in Yomiton Village, Okinawa. The goya vegetable is very bitter, and while relatively cheap in markets, is readily available in many residential back yards. Many Okinawans believe goya is a healthy summer vegetable. Okinawa Prefecture is the southernmost prefecture in Japan, and is made up of hundreds of islands. The main island is home to Kadena Air Base.
